A sad day.

Mr. Srecko Jamnisek, a great guy that, among other great things, started AIESEC in Belgrade and Yugoslavia back in 1953, passed away.

Starting AIESEC in Yugoslavia 57 years ago was a huge thing – that was the first time that such innovative and self-governing movement was allowed in one communist country. I suppose I can even go a bit further and say that it sparkled AIESEC offices and youth networking and leadership development in many other communist countries.

Mr. Jamnišek was inducted to AIESEC Alumni Hall of Fame in 2003. at 50th birthday of AIESEC in Yugoslavia.

Profile of the inductee below copied from aiesec.org:

Remember Bobby McFerrin, the world famous author of “Don’t worry, be happy” song?

Well, if you are aware of him and his work, you also know that he is more then just a singer. His style and approach is very unconventional and his music cannot really be put under any of the genres, which makes him unique and which brought him 10 Grammy awards, invites to play with most famous orchestras in the worlds etc.

But not only… Recently he got an invitation to participate at the World Science Forum and its Panel “Notes and Neurons – Search for the Common Chorus”, which aimed to find answers on questions like “Is our response to music hard-wired or culturally determined?” or “Is the reaction to rhythm and melody universal or influenced by environment?” as well as to illustrate “music’s note-worthy interaction with the brain and our emotions”.

And he did it in his own way. They told him that not everyone is musical. His answer was to show the power of pentatonic scale:

Now, this video is fun to watch for anyone, but if you think a little bit about it, it’s much much more. It shows how wrong and limiting our education system is… Imagine if education was there to really support your creativity and not to limit it within the curriculum made in 1960. or whenever… Imagine if teachers were talking to us instead of lecturing us?

Internal CSR, or being responsible to your own employees is equally important as being responsible externally and communicating it.
Depending on your business, that can mean anything from allowing them to have unions, have fair compensation and benefit systems, growth opportunity, security, but also quite often their own safety.

However, it’s just not good when you overdo it. I bumped into this example at sustainabilityforum.com and found it very disturbing.
I mean, keeping your employees safe is one thing, but having a policy not allowing them to help someone not to be beaten up brutally is something else…

Check it out below. Conclusion is after the video.

The Potential Brutality of CSR

Written By Chris Milton
Published On February 12, 2010

There’s a reason I’ve not put any picture with this post: because there’s a video at the bottom.

I think you should watch this video. It’s just over seven minutes long.

It’s of a news item from CNN in the USA last night.

It shows CCTV footage of a girl getting beaten up and having her head kicked in at a bus station in Seattle, Washington.

Then there’s the three (four? five??) security guards who watch this happen. Clearly within arm’s reach.

This is terrible, says the commentator. Surely as decent human beings, maybe even fathers, they should intervene and stop this brutality?

The attacker even returns for afters and is unhindered.

Why didn’t they intervene? Because there is a policy, apparently, that security guards do not intervene in violent confrontations. Difficult to swallow that one.

So on comes a guest, a Sergent from the local police force, who steps through this policy and explains why it’s there and that, once the fight had finished, over 60 officers attended the scene.

Then at the very end the presenter thanks the Sergent for his time and for explaining it to them.

So that’s OK then.

Now, why am I posting this on a CSR blog?

Simple. The reason these guys didn’t intervene is because they had a policy to follow. Tick boxes, insurance (no doubt) and all of that.

And this has subverted their normal human behaviour.

CSR and sustainability is all about reinventing business: it’s not a standard to acheive, it’s a model to follow on a path of continual improvement.

The tick-boxers and standard acheivers in the CSR world are little better than these security guards: watching disaster happen infront of them “satisfied” that they are following their professional protocols.

No one, not even a member of the public, intervenes. But it’s the security guards who are best placed to do so.

We all want to be on the side of the defenseless, the impoverished, the disadvantaged and the downtrodden. However, we — as people — have to act for that to happen, not just implement a policy and think that’s the best we can do.

Needless to say, those of a sensitive nature may prefer not to watch the video, and please be sensible with minors. The video can also be watched here: http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/02/11/seattle.beating/

Please watch it. Now.

Conclusion:
Personally and as an HR professional, I blame this not only on the company policy, but also on the corporate culture that they obviously have. I mean, this culture has to be very passive-defensive and very strong to change (in my opinion) basic human behavior to react in such circumstances. Or all of these 3 guys are simply bad people…
I hope that the kid is fine…

Toshiba fails in customer centricity or "What happens when you buy a laptop and get a "free" upgrade to Windows 7"

I’m not really sure who’s fail this is, as I don’t like pointing finger at anyone and am quite sure that all players in this chain have “logical” explanation, but in the bottom line, it is Toshiba’s responsibility and definitely deserves attention as a great example of how a great company can fail in customer focus/relations/centricity.

So, what happened was that a friend bought a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and with a free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. A free upgrade sounds very good, especially since Win7 is far better option then Vista, easier to use, faster, more secure etc…
And doing the actual upgrade should be really easy, shouldn’t it? I mean, the year is 2010, even in Serbia a lot of people have a good internet connection and downloading the upgrade file should not be a big deal… Or the company itself should offer free upgrade service to it’s clients. Not a big deal really…

However, it is not that easy as it sounds, apparently… He was told that he will be contacted regarding the upgrade and 2 weeks later he was contacted by DHL and gets this:

If you can’t see it properly, it’s a ~77 EUR bill, and it came with an information that you additionally have to pay customs, VAT and if you don’t have your own carrier, they will use their daughter company (or something) and will charge you extra 5.000 RSD (~50 EUR).
Simple math told him that this “free” upgrade will cost him around 14.000 RSD (~140 EUR) which is 2.000 RSD (~20 EUR) more then buying a Full Home Premium version od Win7 in Belgrade. Just how stupid and illogical does this sound?
Of course, he sent them an e-mail to return the shipment…

I don’t know anyone in Toshiba Serbia, but would be cool if this post somehow reaches someone there, and would be even more cool if that someone contacted me to get this friend’s contacts and actually tried to fix this problem (regardless of who in the chain has actually failed).

(Funnily enough, this example came just in time when a company I work for is pointing out customer centricity as one of our major focuses, so I’ll use this as a very good example)

Source: ashleycecil.com

Lately I had many conversations and debates with colleagues from my company regarding the social media in general, and especially their use at work. By colleagues I mean not only HR people but also people from Risk mgmt, corporate banking etc.
Yeah, kinda forgot to mention – for those that don’t know me that good – am working for a large CEE Bank, both on national (training and development in Serbia) and international level (various programs).

Now, for a GenY representative close to GenX by age, working in a Banking Group, no matter how modern it is, is already a huge challenge. Banks are meant to be safe and secure, so there are so many procedures and rules that simply piss me off sometimes.
I mean, I do understand why there is a need for rules in a Bank, of course, but it looks like that people sometimes invent them just to be able to both defend themselves for being inefficient and to be able to make more steps in the process and make it pretty much ineffective. Not to mention that quite often security means locking computers but not educating people to delete important data from shared folders etc…
In conversations I mentioned earlier, I got feedback that all social media networks have to be forbiden on all computers during working hours, because they are such a distraction. Others were amazed that I constantly have TweetDeck started with twitter, facebook and linkedin feeds moving on the screen all the time. They told me that when I get older I won’t be able to have such concentration.

And these guys are probably right. Social media are a huge distraction. And it’s definitely not easy to follow feeds from 3 different services with who knows how many different topics, while at the same time being focused on the 3 full days offline meeting with 10-20 people in the same room.

It is not easy for them. I understand and accept.

However, for myself, this is not just an ability to do 2 things at the same time. For me social media is the way of living, in a way. Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin are tools, not just platforms to play Farmville or Treasure hunt and other games, or to put your half-naked photos of last nights party or even to fulfil your voyeristic needs…
And no, I’m not a freak. I just use all of these networks for every day business… On that particular meeting, I was following a hashtag of people tweeting from some conference…
Of course, I do understand that not everyone is this deep into social media and ethics at the same time, so I do have realistic expectations, but I still think that forbidding social media at work is a bad idea. People should be educated how to use it properly and you can easily have all your employees as strong advocates of your brand online.

(Not to be understood wrongly – many older employees easily hop on this high-tech-social-media train, however I’ve put emphasis on GenY-ers as they are all into it)

Now, allow me to try to give you an overview of how social media can be used, in HR in particular.

Recruitment
Most obvious and the most used scenario is recruitment – almost all recruiters are nowadays using linkedin and facebook to both search for candidates, as well as to do a background check on them.
However, most of them are not doing that properly. God knows how many times have I been contacted for jobs I simply don’t fit into (not all people in banks are financial analysts ).
Also, recruiters should set all prejudices aside before screening candidates, because candidate’s political views or crazy party photos are not something that really affects business directly (unless you are a human rights organization and his profile picture is with KKK hat .

Free tip: instead of being so narrow, try to dig a bit deeper. Point is – don’t search for negative content (because you will find it for sure), but on the contrary – check if his online behavior fits into your corporate culture, check if he is active in groups that promote the same values like your company. Check his interests too, and compare them to those he wrote in the CV – see which ones he expresses the most, and chances are that you are very close to his social profile.

Retention
Even if most of the social media buzz in HR world is about recruitment, it doesn’t end there. Far from that, as a matter of fact…

You noticed that these youngsters that you are hiring lately are not playing the same game as you did back in the days, right? They seem to arrogant, often ignorant, no respect for formal authorities? Yup, I know, not easy to handle…
But you know what? in most cases, it is not their fault. You are the one that threw them on the road that doesn’t fit their tires. Don’t get it? Did you try driving a Smart car offroad? You just don’t do that…

Free tip: prepare a fitting working place for them. Every generation needs different environment to feel comfortable, so they do too. Their environment is high-tech, with flexible working hours and connectivity everywhere. For you a Blackberry or Iphone is something that by hierarchy only top managers get, while for them it’s just one of the basic, default tools. Also, they erased the dividing line between private and business life and are using their private networks in everyday business all the time (example: hey, do you know anything about this training company? -umm, I think that this company used them earlier this year, lemme check! (he msgs his friend in this company and minutes later info is there)).

If you now think that your company is “not that old-fashioned”, because you have modern structure, training programs, advertising etc. please check out the latest shift:

Source: blog.Benifys.com

What do you think now? Do your employees feel “fit” in the working environment you are offering? Are they satisfied enough not to consider all the headhunters calling all the time?

Think again.

Now stop thinking and act.

…to be continued…

2 big things happened in 2 days - visa abolishment for Schengen zone, and Kosovo independence debate started in Hague...

2 important things happened in last 2 days, and both are moving Serbia forward, one way or another…

First is long waited abolishment of visas for Schengen zone for Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro, or in other words all EU countries except UK. What this means for Serbian people cannot be translated in words, really…
Most of my readers probably don’t know that 20 years ago Serbian (well, Yugoslav at that time) famous “red passport” was among the most respected in the world. Yugoslav people could travel freely to most of the countries of the world etc.
Balkan wars and sanctions did the thing and in last 2 decades borders of most of the countries were closed for Serbs (in order to stop refugees and immigrants), and getting visa was for most countries so tough that we often felt really helpless…
I mean, when they ask you to bring confirmations that you are paying taxes regularly (along with the actual amounts), or to confirm that you don’t want to immigrate to this certain country by submitting proofs that you own real estate in Serbia and also salary slips of all family members, then you really feel small and pathetic… and you are not sure anymore if you want to go to this country or not…
Myself, I consider myself a very lucky person, because being an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) in such Serbia is definitely not an asset However, I started working early (when I was 19) and could support myself for travelling quite a lot in last 10 years, and was really lucky to get proper support for visas when I needed them the most (and couldn’t really prove to consulates that I’m not a potential immigrant). Support from relevant individuals and institutions, that is…

All this resulted into almost 70% of people in Serbia not even having a passport! Can you imagine that?

Therefore, this abolishment of visas means much easier traveling for us. Not only that we don’t need visas, but also the prices are going down… Low cost airline companies are already announcing flights from Belgrade so for example a return ticket to Vienna is not anymore 300 EUR but around 100 EUR…

As soon as it was announced, people on twitter got crazy with planning the trips for new years and Christmas, so I think that only Slovenians will be in Belgrade on December 31st (traditionally there are thousands of tourists from Slovenia in Belgrade for new year eve)

There’s another joke already: “Last one that leaves Serbia on December 19th should turn off the light!”

Read more at:
EU scraps visas for three Balkan states
The EU has granted visa-free travel for citizens of three Balkan countries – Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
From 19 December citizens of the three former Yugoslav republics who hold biometric passports will not need visas to enter the borderless Schengen area.

Second big thing happening is Kosovo case debate at International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Everyone basically knows the story – Kosovo unilateral proclaimed independence, Serbia rejects it, around 60 countries recognized it so far, and then Serbia managed to move this fight from political to legal/judicial arena, so Int. Court of Justice is supposed to give an opinion now.
This opinion is not something obligatory whatsoever but it is a big thing anyways.

If you are not convinced that it is a big thing, let me just tell you that 29 UN member countries are going to debate this topic for 10 days, including all Security Council members, and it is going to be the first time the China is giving an official opinion before this Court.

Regardless of the process and results, this is a big thing for Serbia and Serbs. It’s a step. We still don’t know in which direction, but it is a step forward!

And then again – I am sure that both of these are taking us forward!

Dragana kind of sparkled everything couple of weeks ago, and now Pedya chose a right moment (we took enough time to swallow the whole idea) to start the engine, and here we are…

There’s hope!

Dragana Djermanovic wrote at her blog (only in Serbian, here’s google translate version of her post – link) emotionally about Serbia’s poor brand, about our illogical attitude to look towards past instead of future etc. She compared 2 approaches to promoting something – one is Serbia @ CNN with promoting our historical values (mainly orthodox churches) and second one Kosovo @ TV, Facebook, Twitter etc. promoting people and the future.
Now it’s clear that approach of government of Kosovo is the right one – looking towards future is always better then in the past, promotes young people, young nation, it is colorful etc.
The only issue is – it is as wrong just as the Serbia’s one… It deceives and it is not true. No further analysis needed. Full stop.

Now, who doesn’t know Dragana or doesn’t follow her blog doesn’t really know that she is like.no.other Serbian lady – trying to move things regarding this topic for some time already. She was active on round tables, contacted Ministries, initiated talks among many of us, but in the end she had no luck so far. We all silently nodded while reading her blog posts, or we loudly hated everything she criticized, but that’s about it… Of course, am a bit generalizing, there are for sure some good folks that tried to help her, but in the bottom line – no visible success whatsoever.

But we are a weird nation, we function really in mysterious ways… We had to wait until we could almost feel Dragana’s tears at her blog in order to move our asses and offer initiative, help, whatever…
Or is it Kosovo’s big.awesome.lie that moved us?

In any case, her post caught me off-guard. Am working on my behavior last couple of weeks to become more focused on solutions and while reading her post, I realized I’m thinking about the topic with negative attitude – trying to find out why something doesn’t work and why it is impossible to change it Very Serbian, huh?
But I had to offer a solution, and knowing that people reading her blog are bunch of a cool and smart people, I couldn’t think of a better one but to initiate a meeting of all of them.
Simple idea, but in my opinion it should work – these bright people are meeting often anyways, they know each other, so one thematic meeting could sparkle more then we hope for…
I can already see @Pedya generating ideas on @NovinarskaPatka blog. I wish he takes active role in that idea he proposes, at least with his ingenious drawings that we remember from famous Svet Kompjutera magazine.

What’s my point here?

Again – simple. We need one Radomir Antic in every aspect of our lives, apparently. First he gave us hope with his endless energy, then he brought all the best players together, brought authority and the system and here you go – Serbia is on Fifa World Cup in South Africa and more importantly the fans are so happy now that they don’t have a need to boo at opponent’s national anthems anymore! In just a few months he did it! And he did it with almost the same team other coaches had… How? he just knew how to restructure and direct the huge amount of energy we are spending anyways into a right direction.
We are a very strange nation…
But I believe in us!

Dragana moved us – now let’s meet and see what the next steps and who can do what…
Is that a specialized blog promoting Serbia to foreigners?
Is that something that promotes beautiful Serbia to us, Serbs?
Is that influencing our nation to change attitude, way of thinking, behaviors? How?
Is it all of that?
Is it something else? Something more?

Do you want to help? Please join us in person (still working on a date, let us know at http://twtpoll.com/3znx0q) or leave a comment here…

And then a good friend of mine, that used to be one of my favorite bloggers, has sent me this text.
A very special one.
About a very special thing for Serbs.
Thing they say die the last when you are passing away.
It’s about Hope.
The text has been written long time ago… then updated some years later… and then updated again couple of days ago…

No further due, but this text has moved even the most optimistic myself.
My apologies to my readers that can’t understand Serbian – the text is originally in Serbian and I don’t feel really competent to translate it myself. However, you can still use http://translate.google.com.

Volim more. Taj grad, ex Yu grad, iako u njemu nisam proveo mnogo godina, mi nedostaje ponekad.

Sada je samo, najbolje a naše uz neke nove, čudne Star Spangled Banner i uz sve češće prizivanje onozemaljskih sila, jer smo mi, jadni mali Njujorkanci ipak narod from the sky. Naprotiv.

Imali smo sve i bilo nam je super. Laže ko kaže da nije bilo tako. Nije bilo krvi, nije bilo mrtvih, silovanih, zaklanih, spaljenih kuća, izbeglih, ludih, nije bilo straha, nije bilo osećaja nesigurnosti i bede. Nije. A možda i jeste.

Vesela muzika, vesela garderoba, vesele frizure, veseli filmovi.

Ko? Nije nego. Meni je sve to tragikomično. I tužno i jadno i bedno.

I jesam. Neki nisu. I jesmo. Neki nisu. Nekima nije. I jesu. Žalosno je mnogo. Sve.

Trst? Rim? London? NYC? Šta to beše?

A šta sad?
Ne znam više, mozak me boli.

Neka bude.

U internet knjizi zalosti sam upisao: Hvala ti sto si postojao i sto si doneo sunce u ovu zemlju…

6.5 godina kasnije

Tacka.

Ad Acta.
